Yes, a portable power station can run a small window air conditioner, but it takes a large one, and the runtime is measured in hours, not days. Air conditioners are among the hungriest appliances in a home. Here’s what to expect and how to make it work.
How much power does a window AC use?
A small 5,000 BTU window unit typically draws about 450–500 W while the compressor runs, and an 8,000 BTU unit about 650–750 W. The bigger challenge is start-up: like a fridge, the compressor needs a short burst of two to three times its running power to start, often 1,200–1,500 W for a small unit. Check the label on your AC for its running watts or amps (amps × 120 = watts).
Inverter (variable-speed) air conditioners are much easier to run on battery: they start gently and throttle down once the room is cool, so they use less energy overall.
Runtime for a 5,000 BTU window AC
Based on 450 W running, 1,300 W start-up and the compressor running about 60% of the time, with 85% usable capacity and 10% power headroom.

Portable and central AC
Portable (floor-standing) air conditioners are usually less efficient than window units of the same BTU rating, so expect shorter runtimes. Central air conditioning draws thousands of watts and usually needs 240 V, which is beyond portable power stations; that takes a whole-home battery or generator.
How to keep cool for longer on battery
- Cool one small room and close it off.
- Pre-cool while you have grid or solar power, then run the AC on battery only when needed.
- Raise the thermostat a few degrees and use a fan, which draws only about 50 W, to feel cooler.
- Choose an inverter AC if you’re buying one for backup use.
- Add solar. Hot sunny days are when you need AC most, and also when solar panels produce the most. See our solar charging guide.
Questions
Can a 1,000 Wh power station run an air conditioner?
If it has enough surge to start the compressor, it can run a 5,000 BTU unit for about 3 hours. That’s useful for cooling a bedroom before sleep, but not for all-day use.
How big a power station do I need to run an AC overnight?
For 8 hours of a 5,000 BTU unit, plan on roughly 2,200 Wh of usable energy, so a station of about 2.5 kWh or more, or an expandable system. Add solar to recharge during the day.
Stations that can handle an air conditioner
These current models have the output and surge to start a small window AC with headroom, and enough capacity for a few hours or more.
